The David Cameron government is bent on humiliating Church of England bishops. They are foaming at the mouth about the latest bully-boy tactics being used by the Coalition to push its same-sex marriage Bill through the Lords. One threat the Churchmen have heard is that if they don’t comply, they will lose their special status.
But what kind of special status do bishops (or religions) enjoy any longer?
The Cameron-Clegg political marriage has destroyed the Church’s understanding of that institution and undermined Church teaching about sexual ethics. Meanwhile, religious freedom fighters have had to take the Government to court in Strasbourg in order to win even the most basic rights. The Government’s same-sex marriage agenda sets up churchmen to face opprobrium and even the loss of their livelihood if they do not share the Coalition’s view of gay marriage.
What’s the point of an Established Church if it comes at the price of freedom of conscience?
